JOURNEY BRIEF |
|
Day 1 :
Arrive in Hobart and you will be transferred to
Somerset on the Pier for your overnight stay enjoy
the historic heart of Hobart and the waterfronts
selection of restaurants and cafés.
Day 2 : Early transfer to the Freycinet
Peninsula one of Australias most beautiful
coastal areas of granite outcrops, pristine
beaches, stacks, bluffs, arches and sea caves.
The area is a haven for a diversity of birds and
wildlife. Todays journey includes boating,
fishing and a little walking. Overnight in a
simple but comfortable camp near Cooks Beach.

Day 3 : A choice of walks
today brings the group to Bluestone Bay Camp. Take
either the high road to the Peninsulas peaks for
panoramic views or take the low road rambling along
the waters edge.
Day 4 :
Todays walk brings you to Friendly Beaches Lodge
along the way visit Freshwater Lagoon with its
resident water birds and Bernacchis Pier.
Day 5 :
Your guide will return you to Hobart for a final night
at Somerset on the Pier located in Hobarts
waterfront.
Day 6 : You will be transferred to Hobart Airport
in time for your departure flight.

|
Day 1 - Arrive Hobart,
Somerset on the Pier, 1 night
Arrive Hobart and you will be met and transferred to
Somerset on the Pier for your overnight stay. Somerset on
the Pier is located in Hobarts restored waterfront area.
With views of the Derwent River and historic Sullivan
Cove, your one bedroom suite has a private balcony and
there is an on-site café, restaurant and bar. At your
doorstep you will find the Museum and Art Gallery, a range
of restaurants and pubs, antique shops, studios and
galleries.
Day 2 - The Freycinet
Experience, Cooks Beach Camp, 1 night
Early morning collection and transfer to the Freycinet
Peninsula where you will spend 3 nights on a guided
walking safari. As you leave Hobart, passing through
Orford, you will soon see sweeping views of Maria Island
and the Freycinet Peninsula.
Freycinet National Park is located just south of the
42-degree south latitude line and is a classic temperate
maritime climate is influenced by the moods of the sea.
The coastline boasts pristine beaches, numerous stacks,
bluffs, arches and sea caves, the pink granite is polished
by the sea and orange lichens cover the rocks. Freycinet
is a haven for a diversity of birds and wildlife. Quolls,
wombats, black swans and sea eagles are among the
creatures that thrive on the protected peninsula. Seals
and whales can be spotted in the parks waters.
Thousands of years ago, when Tasmania was joined to the
mainland, this Peninsula was the southerly extension of
the land bridge that ran from Wilsons promontory in
Victoria to the Furneaux group of islands in Bass Strait.
From Coles Bay travel by boat (weather permitting)
stopping for a picnic lunch at Schouten Island. Guided by
the captain, who has a lifetime of experience in these
waters, stop to fish for flat head and gurnard that will
later provide a delicious camp dinner.
The boat will deliver you to Bryans Beach and from here
it is just a short walk to Cooks Camp. The camps at Cooks
Beach and Bluestone Bay are managed on strict
environmental principles and include private twin share
tents with full head height, raised timer floors and beds
with foam mattresses. Kitchen facilities enable your
talented guides to prepare delicious meals and the camps
include a ventilated toilet.
Todays walking time is approximately 1 hour and covers 3
kms. Dinner of fresh fish and Tasmanian wine finishes off
the day.

Day 3 - Bluestone Bay
Camp, 1 night
Today you will have the choice of either the Mount
Graham Walk or the Hazards beach walk.
The Mount Graham Walk is a magnificent and challenging
hike to the top of Mount Graham where the ocean views are
magnificent. The path follows Quartzite Ridge to Wineglass
Bay and on the Beach you join the Hazard Beach walkers.
The approximate distance is 16 kms and this walk takes
about 8 hours. The Hazards Beach Walk is a gentler option
along Cooks Beach and Hazards Beach amongst Hooded
Dotterels and Hermit Crabs. Following isthmus track you
reach Wineglass Bay and Hazards spectacular lookout. Soon
you meet the Mount Graham walkers and descend to the
fisheries for a short vehicle transfer to Bluestone Bay.
This walk covers approximately 12 kms and takes about 6
hours.
The Bluestone Bay Camp overlooks the spectacular Freycinet
Coastline enjoy a cold beer or a glass of wine, followed
by dinner and overnight in the simple but comfortable
camp.
Day 4 -
Friendly Beaches Lodge, 1 night
After exploration of little Bluestone Bay and the
spectacular White Water Walls, the group will set out
along the cliff tops of Bluestone Ridge with their views
to the Nuggets and Boot Rock. Visit Freshwater Lagoon with
its resident water birds before continuing on, walking
overland through bush and heath land. The path takes you
via Friendly Point and Bernacchis Pier to the Lodge at
Friendly Beaches where you stop for dinner and overnight.
The walk will take approximately 6 hours covering 12 kms.
Hidden in the Casuarina vegetation behind Friendly
Beaches, the Friendly Beaches lodge is the ultimate in
ecologically sensitive design and accomodation. With
minimum impact to its surrounding environment, you are
just minutes from miles of unspoilt virgin beach on the
edge of the Freycinet National park, yet totally invisible
to the outside eye. The lodge is only accessible to
selected guests so you see no one other than your guides
and hosts, who will spoil you with exquisite cuisine and
outstanding Tasmanian wines.
Day 5 -
Return to Hobart, Somerset on the Pier, 1 night
After breakfast, your guide will take you walking
along the Friendly Beaches to Isaacs Point lookout.
Alternatively spend the morning surf fishing, exploring
the beach or reading in the lodge library.
Depart for Hobart, arriving about 5pm and you will be
delivered to your residence at Somerset on the Pier for an
overnight stay.
Day 6 -
Departure
Return your hire car to Launceston Airport in time for
your departure flight.
