The Great South

From the wild coast of the Southern Ocean and the Great Australian Bight to the rugged beauty of the Flinders Ranges and the arid north; from gentle rolling valleys of the wine country to the intense wildlife and beauty of Kangaroo Island - South Australia offers great variety in a small-ish area.

The Flinders Ranges provide some of the most accessible and spectacular outback scenery in Australia. A long Aboriginal history combines with the region’s more recent pioneering heritage. The Gawler Ranges is an ancient and spectacular wilderness area of vast volcanic rock domes, salt lakes and abundant wildlife.

Fringed by the Southern Ocean, the Eyre Peninsula boats 2,000 kilometres of ruggedly beautiful coast. In the shallows of Baird Bay take part in a remarkable wildlife experience and join sea lions and dolphins in the water. Near Adelaide are the beautiful and historic wine regions and to the east, the hills give way to the dry plains that surround the Murray, Australia’s greatest river.

 Best time to visit

Year round South Australia is beautiful though to avoid extremes travel in Spring or Autumn.

In the Outback summer daytime temperatures often exceed 37° Celsius (100°F) while nights are cold. In winter, days are mild and often sunny. When rains come they can bring violent flash flood.

Kangaroo Island's climate is best described as temperate. Temperatures tend to be a few degrees cooler in summer and warmer in winter than on the mainland. The ocean plays a large role in the island's daily weather pattern.

In the wine country the climate is cool to mild in winter, warm to hot in summer, with spring and autumn being delightfully mild.
