More About South Australia

South Australia’s capital is Adelaide - an elegant city of colonial architecture, clean beaches, hills and parks. Set beside the Torrens River, Adelaide was designed by Colonel William Light in 1836 and was laid out on a square mile grid of wide streets. All the inner city highlights are within easy walking distance and it's almost impossible to get lost. Adelaide’s people enjoy a captivating blend of Mediterranean and Australian lifestyles with good shopping, restaurants, cafés and culture.

Just 20 minutes drive from the centre of town, the Adelaide Hills offer a taste of country life with great food, fine wines, stunning scenery and heritage towns. Continue through the Hills to the wine regions and enjoy the changing scenery of market gardens interspersed with traditional Australian bush land and lush pastures.

Wine has long dominated life in the Barossa Valley and there are over 50 wineries ranging from some of Australia’s largest through to small individual wine makers. Explore German and English-style villages, visit churches and chateau, the local restaurants and cafes specialize in serving regional foods, and butchers and bakers offer traditional wursts, breads and cakes.

The gentle rolling hills of the Clare Valley are dotted with some of Australia’s oldest and most picturesque heritage towns and homesteads. The Clare is also home to many acclaimed cool climate wines and its vineyards remain small, the emphasis on quality. Walking and cycling trails are the ideal way to discover some of the smaller boutique wineries hidden behind weeping willows and tall red gums.

One of the world's great rivers, the Murray River dominates the land east of Adelaide. Flowing 2520kms from the Australian Alps to the Southern Ocean it passes through snow-capped mountains, rich agricultural country, past steep sandstone cliffs, giant red gums, wetlands and vast tracts of Mallee country. The Murray is famous for its forests of red gums, paddle steamers, little-known national parks, wildlife, bird life and the spirit of long gone Aboriginal dwellers.
