Day 1 - Depart Adelaide
by road Arkaba Homestead, 3 nights
After collecting your hire car head north - the region of the Flinders Ranges
and outback South Australia covers the area starting 200km north of Adelaide at
Crystal Brook and extends to the state's borders in the north, east and west.
The Flinders Ranges is a majestic mountain range stretching for 300km and offering
experiences of the outdoor variety. The area is noted for its scenic beauty, unique
flora and fauna, fascinating geology and heritage.
The drive to Arkaba will take about 6 hours and you will spend 3 nights as the guests of Dean and Lizzie
Rasheed.
Arkaba is a heritage-listed property dating from 1851 and these days 7500 odd sheep graze its 100 square
miles. In 1856 a magnificent stone wool shed was built and with 40 stands (shearers work stations) it is
one of the biggest in Australia. The rambling homestead was built 4 years later in 1860, testimony to the
necessary priorities and hard lives that the pioneering families endured.
Day 2 & 3 - Explore
the Flinders Ranges
Whilst you are welcome to join in the station activities such as shearing
(in season), checking the windmills etc, the real reason for a visit to Arkaba
is to view this extraordinary land.
The vegetation and wildlife of the Flinders Ranges is quite varied. South Australia's floral emblem the
Sturt Desert Pea is commonly found, as are magnificent River Red Gum tees. Much of the area is national
park, and the extensive area of rolling hills of the Flinders Ranges National Park is home to numerous
Red Kangaroo, Emus and Galahs.
A scenic flight (optional) over the rock ramparts of Wilpena Pound is the best way to appreciate this
extraordinary geological formation. Take day trips to explore the gorges and valleys of the Flinders
Ranges and a chance to spot some of the wildlife - Red Kangaroos, Emus, Wallaroos, Yellow-footed Rock
Wallabies.
Or enjoy a sundowner drink from on top of the Elder Range, as the sun disappears across the outback
plains beyond.
Day 4 - Journey ends
with return to Adelaide
On the way back to Adelaide you may care to stop for lunch in the wine
country from cafés in the historic towns to gourmet restaurants at the
cellar door, there is plenty of choice.
Upon arrival in Adelaide return your hire car or retain it for further use - just ask our team to
modify this short break to suit your needs.
