Sydney Surrounds
Sydney offers the very best of the Australian lifestyle
from natural beauty to urban surf beaches through
family activities such as the Zoo, the Aquarium and
Olympic Park, to festivals and weekend markets. However
when you feel the need to get away from the city,
you will find that in each direction (north, west
& south) three very different destinations await.
In the gorges and escarpments of the Blue Mountains
are vast tracts of native bush land that are rich
in spectacular rock formations and native wildlife.
Panoramic views reach to the horizon, waterfalls plummet
to the valleys below and there are numerous lookouts
and quiet places where you can be alone with nature.
Offering a gentler pace than Sydney, the Mountains
picturesque towns and villages boast boutiques, art
and antique galleries, cafés and restaurants.
The Hunter Valley is just 2 to 3 hours north of Sydney
and its highlights include great wines, gourmet food,
superb restaurants and cafes, rustic cottages and
romantic beachside retreats. Explore the wineries
by horse-drawn carriage, hot air balloon or bicycle.
Meander through Maitland's elegant heritage precincts
or visit historic Morpeth, Australia's oldest river
port. Singleton and the Upper Hunter reflect Australia's
rural heritage with small country townships and farm
stays. The area also offers wineries, horse studs,
forests and a wealth of outdoor activities. Further
on are Barrington Tops an area of rugged mountains,
gorges and dense forest.
South of Sydney there is a charming strip of unspoilt
coastline offering pristine beaches, picturesque seaside
towns and quaint rural villages. Stretching from Berry
to Eden, the South Coast contains no less than 10
separate national and marine parks. Each national
park has its own special charms from the world's whitest
sand beaches and abundant wildlife, to pristine shingle
beaches and rugged headlands. For something completely
different, meander through Kangaroo Valley or the
quaint arts and crafts villages of the region. Nature
lovers can enjoy a whale or dolphin watch cruise,
an offshore fishing charter or a leisurely river cruise.
For those who can't catch their own, sumptuous fish,
crayfish, crab, oysters and prawns are available everywhere.
