Day 1 - Arnhemland
via Kakadu Davidsons Safari Camp, 2 nights
Your tour guide/driver will collect you
from your Darwin hotel early this morning in
a fully equipped 4WD vehicle. Your first stop
is Fogg Dam to view wetlands of the Adelaide
River before visiting the bird hides of Mamukala
Billabong in Kakadu National Park. After a picnic
lunch, travel to Nourlangie to view some of
Kakadu's spectacular Aboriginal rock art. With
permission from the traditional owners, cross
the East Alligator River and enter Aboriginal
Arnhemland. Visit Injalak Arts Centre, for an
opportunity to buy art, particularly the x-ray
style of bark painting that originated from
this locality. Continue on to Davidson's Safari
Camp near Mt Borradaile, arriving in time for
sunset.
Max Davidson has spent most of his life in
this area and it is his intimate relationship
with the traditional owners of the land that
enables visitors to experience a pristine wilderness
seen by few. Each of the 12 tents is airy and
has electric lighting. Shared bathroom facilities
are situated a short distance behind the tents.
There is a central social area with a library,
kitchen and dining area where guests enjoy wholesome
and generous meals.
Note: our ability to drive into Arnhemland
and visit Oenpelli is dependant on weather/road
conditions and river heights. Where it is not
possible, light plane transfers will depart
from Jabiru direct to Davidsons
Day 2 - Arnhemland
Davidsons Safari Camp
Today, with your guide, explore the traditional
art of the world-renowned Mt Borradaile area.
You have the opportunity to ramble through a
maze of catacomb-like caves thickly painted
with Aboriginal art, and discover traditional
and contact phase artefacts tucked away in crevices.
At sunset enjoy a private boat cruise through
the nationally significant wetlands of Arnhemland's
Cooper Creek. You may photograph your first
crocodile or watch brolgas dance, as your boat
glides through one of the most prolific places
for wildlife viewing.
Day 3 - Cobourg
Peninsula Cobourg Beach Camp, 2 nights
Leaving the magic of Mt Borradaile will
be difficult but you have the stunningly beautiful
Cobourg Peninsula to explore. Your drive north
through Arnhemland takes you through forests
of native cypress and groves of graceful kentia
palms, to catch glimpses of the azure waters
of the Arafura Sea. In the mid to late afternoon
arrive at the coastal camp, overlooking the
entrance to Port Essington, only metres away
from a remote sandy beach.
Day 4 - Cobourg
Peninsula Cobourg Beach Camp
This morning travel by boat across the sparkling
waters of Port Essington to visit historic Victoria
Settlement, the tragic relics of one of the
first European settlements of North Australia.
The waters around the Cobourg Peninsula are
abundant in some amazing marine life such as
Dugong, dolphins, 6 species of marine turtle
crocodiles, stingrays and plenty of fish. After
lunch, explore the wetlands, go for a coastal
walk or try your luck at fishing. Dinner and
accommodation will once again be at the Cobourg
Beach Camp.
Day 5 - Cobourg
Peninsula Cobourg Beach Camp
Explore the Eastern side of the Park today,
this time in 4WD vehicles. Cobourg is home to
the first RAMSAR wetlands (wetlands of international
importance) in Australia with freshwater Paperbark
swamps and billabongs within 100mtrs of the
coast! Continue on via the Northern beaches,
commonly used as turtle nesting areas and covered
in a wide range of shells. In the afternoon
visit the Parks Cultural & Information Centre
before heading back to Camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 6- Return to Darwin
Depart Cobourg early and head back to Kakadu
National Park. After lunch there is the option
of Guluyambi Cultural Cruise on the East Alligator
River or alternatively visit Ubirr rock to spend
time viewing some of Kakadus best Aboriginal
Rock Art and enjoying spectacular views of the
surrounding wetlands and stone country. In the
late afternoon return to Darwin.
