BARRIER REEF & RAINFOREST

Far north Queensland highlights diversity - from the Great Barrier Reef and the World Heritage listed Rainforests to the outback plains and gorges of the Gulf Savannah.

The beautiful coastline provides an idyllic tropical holiday location - warm seas, water sports, miles of sandy beaches against a backdrop of mountainous rainforest. Fringed by the Great Barrier Reef, there are over 1,000 islands in the region, some boast mini-rainforests and are encircled by coral reefs.

The Daintree and Cape Tribulation are made up of tropical rainforests, deserted white beaches and breathtaking World Heritage areas and are home to some beautiful species of birds, plants and animals.

Complimenting the diversity of the region is the variety of accommodation we use to design our Reef & Rainforest journeys. From abandoned gold mines, now converted to stylish lodgings; to tree houses on Robinson Crusoe style islands; to luxury resorts and rainforest bungalows the region is full of innovative places offering welcoming hospitality.

 Best time to visit

The locals say there are two seasons - 'the green' and 'the dry'.

From April to October, the dry season offers warm, sunny days, cool evenings and calm seas.

Most rain falls in the green season, from November to May. Without this ‘liquid sunshine’ there would be no rainforest and as many visitors discover it does not interfere with diving, snorkelling or touring to any great extent. Swimming is not recommended close to the mainland shore between October and May due to box jellyfish. Snorkelling and diving at the outer reef or off the islands is safe year round.
