Tasmania
was the last part of the Australian continent
to separate from the great southern Gondwana,
45 million years ago. This, together with
10,000 years of isolation from mainland
Australia, has resulted in Tasmanias environment
being significantly different to the rest
of the country. It is Australias smallest
state in terms of both size and population,
yet it offers diverse and spectacular scenery,
unspoilt wilderness and a rich heritage.
Tasmania is the last bastion of several mammals that
were once widespread on the Australian mainland.
Tasmanian Devils, Eastern & Spotted-tailed Quolls,
Tasmanian Bettongs and a variety of
smaller marsupials
are frequently seen. Coastal wildlife includes Fairy
Penguins, Fur Seals, sea lions, dolphins, Humpback and
Southern Right whales and the occasional visitor from
further south King Penguins and Elephant Seals.
Tasmanians pride themselves on top quality food and wine
and the islands quality produce enhances their gourmet
cuisine, which is an integral part of their warm
hospitality.

Best time to visit
|
|
Tasmania enjoys four distinctly
different seasons and a temperate maritime climate.
The summer months from December to February are
sunny and warm, with maximum temperatures from 20°
to 25° Celsius. Many of the islands popular
festivals are held at this time - the Launceston
Festival, the Hobart Summer Festival, the Taste of
Tasmania and the northwests athletic carnivals.
Autumn is a mellow season with calm, sunny days and
the native deciduous beeches are ablaze with color.
In winter a dusting of snow covers the highland
peaks and the days are crisp, clear and bracing.
The average high temperature in winter is 12°C and
the minimum is rarely below 5°C except of course in
the high country. Spring is cool and fresh. Gardens
around the State come to life and Tasmania
celebrates with the Blooming Tasmania festival.
Rainfall varies dramatically across the State.
Hobart is Australias second-driest capital city,
while on the West Coast an annual average of 2400
mm (95 inches) ensures the rainforest thrives.
