Australias
environment is one of the most diverse on earth, and its
landscape the oldest. Its flora and fauna have evolved in
isolation for 45 million years, untouched by the upheavals of
the worlds major continental plates. The result is a unique,
highly specialised and very fragile environment.
The landscape changed with 60,000 years of Aboriginal
inhabitation but the 200 years of European settlement, with
the subsequent land clearance and introduction of exotic flora
and fauna, has presented a massive environmental challenge.
With the largest mammal extinction rate of any country in the
last two centuries, and a host of species on the endangered
list, many of Australias lesser-known mammal species (the
Mala, Bridled Nailtail Wallaby, Numbat, Rufous Bettong, Woylie
to name a few) can only be seen in feral proof conservation
areas.
One of our most important company values is to help foster
conservation of our natural and cultural heritage and we look
to give something back to the environment from which we
derive our livelihood. In addition to being fun and
interesting, we hope you find our trips to be both educational
and inspirational.
Many of the places we recommend you stay do not conform to the
standard hotel star rating system instead they offer
comfortable accomodation, good food and friendly hospitality.
You will often be hosted by local residents and enjoy the
depth of their knowledge and the stories they have to tell.
For those travelers with special interests we go the extra
mile and find a local guide with the right kind of specialist
knowledge.
By supporting smaller, local guides and enterprises, often in
wild and difficult to reach places both you the traveller and
we the company, help preserve their expertise and passion and
in doing so we all conserve Australias natural and cultural
heritage.
