On Deep Well Station, a million acre cattle property in Central
Australia |
|
When
the overland telegraph line was built from Adelaide
to Darwin, revolutionizing communications between
London and her distant dominion, Bill Hayes great
grandfather was with the team. Today, the 6th generation
of the Hayes family lives at Ooraminna on Deep Well
Station a million-acre cattle country in central Australia.
Accommodation consists of four cottages, each built of stone,
wood and corrugated iron in Australian outback style. The
furnishings are rustic but stylish - Hessian curtains, wooden
floors, 4 poster beds hewn from local timber. Bathrooms are en
suite, with shower and spa bath. Each cottage has a verandah,
the perfect place to enjoy the great Australian outback.

The
recently built homestead has a reconstructed bar area for
evening gatherings and dinner with the family will give you
the opportunity to hear a few yarns and learn more of the
regions history as well as about the way outback life changes
each year.
During
the day join Bill and Jan Hayes to check the bores
on the property. If your riding skills are up to it,
help muster some of their 5,000 cattle or watch them
drive the cattle by helicopter from the most remote
corners of the station. There are good creek walks
and views to be had from the rock outcrops on the
property. Trips into Alice Springs and visits to the
Royal Flying Doctor Service and School of the Air
are interesting. Worth visiting is the nearby Desert
Park where 3 of the regions major habitats (sand country,
desert rivers & woodlands) are represented and
where your aboriginal guide will introduce you to
the living story of Australia's deserts, its plants,
animals, landscapes and people
If you are not including a visit to Uluru & Kata Tjuta, we can
arrange a day trip from Ooraminna, Jan will deliver you to
Alice Airport for the short flight and her own guides will
escort you.
Whatever the
day holds, towards its end, join Bill and some of the
station hands for a beer and to watch the suns last
rays disappear across the red coloured sandstone
outcrops and the vast acreage
beyond.
