Wine estate, private museum and luxury accomodation |
|
Moorilla
Estate offers Hobarts only five star lodging in chalet
style units suspended from steel frames high above
the coastline. The Estate also houses a museum of
antiquities with African, Egyptian, and Mesopotamian,
pre-Columbian and Roman artifacts.
Founded as a winery in the 1950s, Moorilla has evolved into a
cultural haven that draws visitors from around the world to
enjoy award-winning wine, food, accomodation and the Moorilla
Museum of Antiquities.
Moorilla
Estate is the birthplace of Tasmania's modern wine
industry - although earlier pioneers had attempted
to grow grapes and make wine, it was Italian business
immigrant Claudio Alcorso who managed to combine viticulture
and marketing in 1955. Alcorso was a patron of the
arts and brought his sense of style and aesthetics
to life at Moorilla. When the estate fell on hard
times in the 1990s, new owners stepped in to revive
the site to former glories in keeping with the Alcorso
legacy.
Architect Mike Brellis has created accomodation that combines
city comfort and countryside tranquility in a stunning
location. The chalet-style units (one and two-bedroom) are
light and airy and suspended from steel frames on the edge of
a cliff offering sensational views over the water.
Each unit has a private wine cellar featuring over 60 wines
from Moorilla and St Matthias as well as a fully
self-contained with kitchen and laundry, an antiquities
display, private walk-out balcony, air-conditioning and such
important finishing touches as CD stereo and bathrobes. Guests
can enjoy the award winning restaurant (lunch only) and
explore the adjoining Museum of Antiquities and Winery &
Cellar Door for tasting & sales
