Lord McAlpines former Broome residence in
Broome |
|
McAlpine
House was built in 1910 for Pearling Master Herbert
Kennedy. It was built in the traditional and unique
architectural style of Broome and is one of the best-preserved
residences from its era.
In 1982, Lord Alistair McAlpine of West Green purchased the
house and carried out a careful refurbishment within the
original architectural style. He also planted an extensive
garden with aviaries that continue to house exotic birds.
In the late 1990's, the house once again became a pearler's
home when Marilynne Paspaley purchased it. The Paspaley family
have been successful master pearlers in Broome and the
Kimberley since the 1930s. Ms Paspaley has retained the
home's magical charm and nurtured its evolution into an
exclusive boutique hotel, catering to special guests from
around the world.
There
are six air-conditioned guest rooms each with a private
bathroom though not all are en suite. All are tastefully
furnished with Javanese furniture; all have air-conditioning
and fans as well as a private outdoor area. Latticed
verandahs and cane sofas provide plenty of quiet restful
corners and staying at McAlpine House is more akin
to relaxing with friends than staying in an hotel.
Take time to enjoy the swimming pool, library and lush
tropical gardens and when it is time to explore Broome your
hosts will assist with advice on wanderings, eating out and
guided touring.
