Private Wildlife & Nature Sanctuary |
|
Inala
is a 500 acre wildlife sanctuary owned by Tonia Cochran,
a passionate conservationist and nature guide. The
island’s extreme southerly location and isolation
have made it a paradise for nature lovers, its habitats
ranging from spectacular ocean coastline and secluded
beaches, to coastal heath and temperate rainforest.
Bruny is home to all Tasmania’s endemic bird species
and a variety of wildlife.
The charm of Inala comes in its simple homely style and
location in beautiful bush country at the foot of the South
Bruny Ranges. The three bedroom cottage is ideal for families
or for those wanting self-contained privacy. Tonia provides
full breakfasts and dinners while lunch is usually a bush
picnic enjoyed in a remote corner of the island.
Inala
is a heaven for native flora
& fauna and approximately 3/4 of the property
is native vegetation. Rambling walks with Tonia will
introduce you to the flora and fauna of Inala; it
is a breeding site for the rare Swift Parrot and home
to 90 species of birds. The rare Forty-spotted pardalote
(a tiny jeweled bird) is often seen near the cottage.
Much of the wildlife is nocturnal and an evening drive with
Tonia is likely to reveal Brush tail Possums, Bennett's
Wallabies, Tasmanian Pademelons and Eastern Quolls. Tasmanian
native hens, echidnas and possums, wallabies, birds of prey
and many others can also be seen on the property. Around the
island visit a colony of Australian Fur Seals, a large Fairy
Penguin rookery and keep an eye out for migrating Humpback and
Southern Right Whales - next stop Antarctica!
