On
Tasmanias east coast, the Freycinet Peninsula boasts
some of Australias most beautiful scenery and is
the setting for one of the countrys greatest walking
safaris that is hosted by local guides who are experts
in the the geology of the peninsula as well as the
flora and fauna. The granite peaks of the Peninsula
mark the most southerly extension of the land bridge
that once linked Tasmania with mainland Australia.
It is a spectacular coast of sheltered coves, quiet
beaches and granite cliffs.
Hidden in the vegetation and surrounded by the Freycinet
National Park, Friendly Beaches Lodge is the ultimate in
ecologically sensitive design and accomodation. With minimum
impact on its surrounding environment, you are just minutes
from miles of unspoilt virgin beach, yet totally invisible to
the outside eye. The lodge is only accessible to a handful of
guests so you see no one other than your small group, your
guides and the hosts who spoil you with exquisite cuisine and
outstanding Tasmanian wines.
On
a 3 night walk you spend 2 nights at temporary camps
at Bluestone Bay and Cooks Corner. They provide comfort
under canvas, while gourmet meals and a glass of Tasmanian
wine under the stars are the perfect way to finish
the days adventure. Your 3rd night is spent at the
lodge, which consists of 8 comfortable and simply
furnished rooms looking out into the surrounding bush.
The bathrooms are not en suite and are designed for
zero environmental impact.
The timber living area is linked to the accomodation by
timber decking and has dining, sitting and open kitchen areas
gathered around a log fire and opening out onto a deck. Meals
of excellent home cooked cuisine are served with premium
Tasmanian wines.
The coastline boasts pristine
beaches, numerous stacks, bluffs, arches and sea caves.
You will have the chance to explore the beach or the
surrounding national park with the help of your guide,
whose particular expertise is in this part of Tasmania.
You stand a good chance of spotting a White-breasted sea
eagle scanning the seas, or Australian gannets diving
for their meals, or perhaps a Bennetts wallaby, wombat
or quoll. The guides are all interested and
knowledgeable naturalists with a variety of expertise
from geological to botanical to
wildlife.
