19th Century Mansion, Strahan |
|
The
village of Strahan, situated near the mouth of the
Gordon River on Tasmanias west coast, is the gateway
to one of Australias most spectacular wilderness
areas. Once a sleepy mining, fishing and logging community,
it is now a bustling tourist centre. The colonial
history and heritage of Strahan is echoed in the architecture
of the villages cottages. Built along the Esplanade
at the water's edge, the cottages look out across
the bay, their classic lines recalling the pace and
style of earlier days.
Franklin
Manor, built more than a century ago, has been lovingly
restored and now combines premium hotel features with
a stylish sense of home. In the mid 1890s a sea captain
and harbour master used his passion of anything nautical
to build one of the grandest houses in Tasmania. The
house was actually pre-cut in Hobart and shipped
to Strahan for assembly.
The Manor has fourteen bedrooms in the main house and four
cottages (ideal for families) in the Stables. All rooms have
queen or king beds, en suite facilities and some have open
fireplaces. The highly regarded restaurant serves a
country-style breakfast in the morning while the dinner menu
has an emphasis on Tasmanian produce and fresh local seafood.
Guests
can relax over afternoon tea on the verandah or enjoy
the company of fellow travelers in the comfortable
lounge with its roaring log fire, select wine from the
Manors extensive cellar or mix a favourite cocktail at
the
bar.

Why Franklin Manor?
-
The Manor is
the ideal base from which to explore the West Coast cruise
the Gordon River, take a helicopter or seaplane flight over
the wilderness, jet boat, hike, enjoy spectacular ocean
beaches and visit the notorious penal settlement on Sarah
Island.
-
Franklin Manor has
recently been featured in the cookbook 'Under the
Sun', which only includes the top 100 restaurants in
Australia. This is in part due to the Manors
exceptional tasting menus using totally fresh
Tasmanian produce. The choice being a four course
Taste of Tassie, or an eight course-tasting menu The
Discovery, all of small
portions.
