Exclusive Camp on the Kimberley Coast |
|
In
the very northwest of the continent is one of Australias
most remote and wild coastal spots. This is a place
where time is measured in sunsets and tides - where
you can be as sociable or as solitary as you like.
Long time resident of Kununurra, Bruce Ellison spent years
exploring the Kimberley coast, looking for the perfect
location in which to build his camp. Fresh water, stunning
views, easy air access and the opportunity to show case the
regional highlights were all criteria he considered. Bruce
found his perfect place in a sheltered bay that was so remote
it was not marked on maps and he named it Faraway Bay and then
he built his Bush Camp.
Each of the 8 bush-style cabins enjoys a 180-degree view of
the ocean. Mosquito nets, safari chairs and a fan give each
cabin a rustic but comfortable feel. Facilities while not en
suite (truly it does not matter when you get there) are nearby
and hot water for showers is always available. There is a
freshwater swimming pool perched on the edge of the cliff and
it is the perfect spot for watching tiny colourful birds swoop
down to drink and gazing across the bay.

The
main building, Eagle Lodge is an open-fronted pavilion
perched high on the cliff top. From this vantage point
dugongs, sharks and even crocodiles are often seen
swimming in the bay below. There are hammocks for
lazing, and the paved terrace is just the spot for
a drink as the sun descends across the ocean and sets
the red sandstone cliffs aglow.
From Faraway Bay take day cruises
up the Kimberley coast to the King George River, where,
after the wet season the falls cascade over a hundred
foot cliff into the gorge below. Enjoy pristine beaches,
for walking, not swimming remember those crocs &
sharks! South of the camp Monitor Pool is a magnificent
circular plunge pool at the foot of imposing basalt and
sandstone cliffs and a refreshingly cool and safe place
for
swimming.
