Arnhem Land Bush Camp in Aboriginal Territory |
|
Wake
in the morning to a cacophony of noise from the kookaburras
and whistling kites, with the stark orange glow of
the sun behind the savanna trees - Arnhem Land is one
of Australias last untouched wildernesses.
Max Davidson has spent much of his life hunting buffalo in the
area, and his intimate relationship with the local land
owners, make this a unique opportunity to experience the
Arnhem Land plateau.

The camp comprises 12 large tents furnished with basic
comforts bug proof lining, beds with linen, drinking water,
bedside table, lighting and fans (only in the wet season does
the generator run all night). Toilet and shower facilities are
not en suite and are shared.
The living and dining area is an iron-roofed building, with
mosquito proof gauze around the outside. Designed more as a
hunters camp than for comforts, the facilities are simple.
Meals are of a high standard, especially the fish, usually
barramundi and cooked fresh the camp specialty is barramundi
sashimi. A continental breakfast is served and lunch is often
a picnic. Soft drinks, beer and wine are provided (bring your
own spirits). There is a collection of reading material on
local flora and fauna and on aboriginal heritage.
So
why is this basic camp to special? Quite simply the
region, the immense knowledge of the guides, Maxs
relationship with the land and with the Aboriginal
owners of the land and the activities.
Sitting in one of the rock art galleries, and staring up at
the colors and shapes that have been painted over the
centuries, while around you lies the evidence of thousands of
years of aboriginal occupation, is an experience that opens
your mind to the depth of history and culture that lies mostly
hidden in modern Australia.
Cruising the Mt Borradaile wetlands, amongst the thousands of
birds that have made it their home it is easy to forget the
harshness of this land at the top of Australia. Take a fishing
line and try your hand at barramundi, a catch is almost
assured. Cool off in what is perhaps Australias most
beautiful swimming hole surrounded by the bird sounds of
Arnhem Land.

Why Davidsons?
-
The adventure of
a simple but comfortable camp surrounded by an untouched
wilderness.
-
The Aboriginal
art walks are amongst the best in Australia with huge
quantities and variety easily accessed. The guided walks
also include much information on bush tucker and aboriginal
life.
-
Barramundi
fishing in the billabong with huge quantities to be expected
- fish are caught on a catch & release basis and plenty is
kept for the kitchen. The camp supplies all equipment.
-
The billabong in
front of Mt Borradaile is an outstanding wetland and
commonly seen are egrets, ibis, herons, duck, jacanas,
forest kingfishers, kites, sea eagles and geese. On savanna
walks expect to see tree creepers, cuckoo-shrikes,
honeyeaters, red-winged parrots, red-backed wrens to name a
few.
-
Our well-traveled
staff says that the best freshwater swimming hole in
Australia is here at Davidsons. A swim down the hole will
reveal Azure and Forest Kingfishers, honeyeaters, rufous
whistlers, leaden flycatchers and friarbirds.
-
The sheer luxury of being so
remote from the world in a land that really is before
our time.
