Pastoral property in the Flinders Ranges |
Nestled at the foot of the Elder Range, in
South Australias Flinders Ranges, Arkaba Station is the home
of Dean and Lizzie Rasheed, whose family have long been part
of the regions history.
Arkaba is a heritage-listed property dating
from 1851 and these days 7500 odd sheep graze its 100 square
miles. In 1856 a magnificent stone wool shed was built and
with 40 stands (shearers work stations) it is one of the
biggest in Australia. The rambling homestead was built 4 years
later in 1860, testimony to the necessary priorities and hard
lives that the pioneering families endured.

Dean and Lizzie will host your stay in the
homesteads guest wing which comprises two twin bedroom's with
private bathroom and lounge / reading room. Meals are taken
with the Rasheeds - good home style cuisine washed down with
local wines and interesting discussion of the region.
Whilst
you are welcome to join in the station activities
such as shearing (in season), checking the windmills
etc, the real reason for a visit to Arkaba is to view
this extraordinary land.
Arkaba is set amongst one of the most
ancient landscapes on earth, the area's geological history
goes back 700 million years and all around are spectacular
formations and views. The best-known landmark is Wilpena
Pound, a rather remarkable rock basin that covers a huge 80
sq. km and reaches a height of about 500m. The area has
wonderful scenery and is home to a whole host of animals.
A scenic flight over Wilpena Pound is a
real highlight, as are horseback trails in the company of an
Aboriginal elder who will guide you through the regions
tradition and culture.
